# The Bird Streets, Explained: Renting a Villa Above the Sunset Strip

![Bird Streets villa rental above the Sunset Strip — Alora Reserve](https://www.alorareserve.com/hubfs/alora-reserve/9262-thrush-way-los-angeles/9F5A1712-Edit.jpg)

**In short:** The Bird Streets are roughly eight streets on the hillside directly above the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, named after birds — Thrasher, Oriole, Robin, Nightingale, Warbler, Skylark and their connecting roads. They hold the highest concentration of view-facing contemporary architecture in Los Angeles. Renting a villa here means buying one specific thing: an unobstructed south-facing view over the basin, four minutes from Sunset, on streets narrow enough to keep traffic out.

## What the Bird Streets actually are

Drive north off Doheny where it meets Sunset and within ninety seconds the road narrows, the sidewalk disappears, and the houses stop facing the street. That is the boundary. Everything above it is the Bird Streets.

The area is small — you could walk it in twenty minutes — and almost every villa was built or rebuilt to do one job: face south over Los Angeles with as much glass as the structure allows. That single-mindedness is why the architecture looks so consistent, and why the rental market here behaves unlike the rest of the hills.

It is not a gated community. No guard, no gate, no association. The privacy is geographic: one way in, streets too narrow to cruise, and houses that present a wall to the road and open entirely at the back.

## Why people rent a villa here specifically

Three reasons come up on nearly every call.

**The view is the product.** Plenty of the Hollywood Hills has a view. The Bird Streets have *the* view — downtown on the left, the Century City towers in the middle, and on a clear afternoon the ocean and Catalina on the right. Guests booking here are booking a sightline, not square footage.

**Proximity without the noise.** Sunset is a four-minute drive. Beverly Hills is eight. But the streets themselves go silent after about ten at night, which is not true of houses closer to the Strip.

**It photographs.** A large share of demand is production — music videos, editorial, brand shoots. The glass-and-basin composition is instantly recognisable, and a location scout can get three different looks inside one villa.

## What it costs, and what drives the number

We do not publish nightly rates, and any broker publishing one for a house like this is quoting a figure they will revise later. Pricing here moves on four things.

**Season.** The spread between February and August on the same villa is wide. Awards season and the first two weeks of August are the peaks.

**Length of stay.** Weekly and monthly rates are not simple multiples of a night. A month-long booking often prices very differently from a three-night weekend — and several Bird Streets villas accept stays of thirty nights and beyond.

**Headcount and staffing.** A villa sleeping ten booked for six people is a different operation from one booked to capacity with a chef, drivers and security.

**Use.** Production and events price separately from a family stay, and they carry insurance requirements.

What we will do is give you the real figure on the phone, for your actual dates, in about ninety seconds. Faster than a form, and considerably more accurate than a published average.

## The three villas we hold here

[**Thrasher Aerie**](https://www.alorareserve.com/houses/thrasher-aerie) — five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, sleeps ten in five king suites. Infinity-edge pool, private theatre, gym, glass-enclosed wine cellar, designer bar, elevator and Crestron control throughout, with retractable glass walls opening the great room onto the terrace. The most amenity-dense villa on our Bird Streets register, and the one production books most often.

[**Thrush Eyrie**](https://www.alorareserve.com/houses/thrush-eyrie) — five bedrooms, eight bathrooms, sleeps ten. The unusual one: a full tennis court and a basketball court on the same property, plus a sauna, cold plunge, cigar lounge and private theatre. The closest thing on this hillside to a private resort, and it parks twelve cars — a garage for eight plus four gated spaces.

[**Cordell Skyhouse**](https://www.alorareserve.com/houses/cordell-skyhouse) — four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, sleeps eight. Smaller and quieter, built around its pool terrace rather than its floor plan. The right answer for two or three couples who want the view without running a large estate.

## Practical things nobody mentions until you arrive

**Parking is the real constraint.** These streets are narrow and largely unparkable. If your group arrives in six cars, the number of on-site spaces matters more than the number of bedrooms. Ask before you book, not after.

**Deliveries are slow.** Some drivers will not take the hill. Provisioning in advance is worth doing, and we handle it.

**The view faces south, which means sun.** West-facing terraces bake between two and six in summer. Where the pool sits relative to the house, and whether there is shade, is worth asking about if you are travelling with small children.

**Noise carries upward.** Sound travels a long way in a canyon and neighbours here are quick to call. Any villa on this hillside cleared for an event is cleared with conditions. We will tell you which ones, and what they are.

## How to actually rent one

There is no booking engine and no calendar to click. Call [(323) 431-7539](tel:+13234317539) or message WhatsApp on [(310) 617-0244](https://wa.me/13106170244) with your dates, your headcount and what the week is for. You will have three matched villas with real rates the same day — usually within two hours.

If the Bird Streets are wrong for your group, we will say so. A ten-person production crew and a family of six with two toddlers want very different houses on this hill, and putting the second group in the first house is how a week goes badly. ## Questions

### Where are the Bird Streets in Los Angeles?

On the hillside directly above the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, reached off Doheny Drive. The streets are named after birds — Thrasher, Oriole, Robin, Nightingale and others.

### Are the Bird Streets gated?

No. There is no gate and no guard. The privacy comes from geography: narrow streets, limited access, and houses built to face away from the road.

### How much does it cost to rent a villa in the Bird Streets?

Rates are quoted per booking rather than published, because pricing moves sharply with season, length of stay, headcount and whether the stay is residential or production use. Call for a real figure for your dates.

### Can you film in a Bird Streets villa?

Production is considered case by case, in writing, with the owner, with conditions on hours, crew size and noise, and insurance is required. The permit is pulled by your production rather than by us. Ask before scouting.

### Can you stay for a month or longer?

Yes. Several Bird Streets villas accept stays of thirty nights and beyond, and longer stays price differently from short weekends.

### How many villas does Alora Reserve hold in the Bird Streets?

Three: Thrasher Aerie, Thrush Eyrie and Cordell Skyhouse.
